Dear John,

Earlier this week the Chinese Communist Party announced sanctions against Freedom House and other pro-democracy groups because of our work amplifying the voices of the people of Hong Kong seeking to protect their freedoms.

The Washington Post reports a Chinese official said Freedom House is “among the institutions that will be sanctioned for their ‘odious behavior’ in Hong Kong.” The official said, “They bear great responsibility for the current chaos in Hong Kong…deserve to be sanctioned, and they must pay the price for it.”

We say: What is ‘odious’ is police violence against students and children. What is odious is people not allowed to practice their religion freely. What is odious is a million people in internment camps and relentless surveillance of law abiding citizens.

Stand with us as we continue to document and expose the Chinese Communist Party’s actions to undermine freedom and human rights in Hong Kong and beyond, and to advocate for the basic rights of all Hongkongers.
