Let's talk elections.
Since the SCOTUS decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, many Democrats have been telling folks that the solution is to vote. Yes, we need to vote, but “go vote” is way too broad and not helpful. What we need to do is focus on races that really matter.
There are Democrats who feel entitled to their seats because they won them over 20 years ago. If an incumbent’s continued service isn’t helping people, if they’re instead serving corporations and lobbies, then we need to reevaluate and find leaders who are actually serving their communities and are ready to step up.
That’s why Alexandria started Courage to Change as a political action committee to build infrastructure and support for candidates in races across the nation who pledge their support of strong progressive values and who are committed to social, racial, and economic justice.
State and local representation matters. When we talk about the scariness of what happened on January 6, it's in part because there's a lot of state legislatures that are willing to support and even work toward overturning electoral college results.
That’s why this cycle, for the first time, we endorsed several dozen local candidates in states across the country, including in races like district attorney — many of whom now have the power to decide whether or not they’re going to prosecute their states’ anti-abortion laws. Some of these races may seem insignificant or “boring,” but the truth is that these races often carry enormous power and impact.
