Have you been following the January 6 hearings? The committee’s evidence made it crystal clear: This is a now-or-never moment for our country’s great democratic experiment. The hearings exposed how the Big Lie of a “stolen” election has brought our democracy to the brink of crisis.
A retired federal judge revered by conservatives, J. Michael Luttig, put it this way during his committee testimony: Donald Trump is “a clear and present danger to American democracy. ... The former president and his allies are executing that blueprint [to overturn the 2024 election] in open and plain view of the American public.”
While Trump’s attempts to overturn the votes of the people in 2020 did not keep him in the White House, they were alarmingly effective in a myriad of other ways. The Big Lie has led to the enactment of dozens of racially targeted laws that make it harder to vote. Trump’s lies have also been used to justify laws that make it easier to sabotage future elections. And his public attacks on election officials emboldened partisan extremists to bully, harass, and threaten nonpartisan election workers who were simply doing their job.
As we fight back against voter suppression laws and advocate for legislation to strengthen our democracy and protect our election workers, your support has never been more important.
