One of the most unjust decisions in American history has finally been overturned. Weekly Newsletter: June 29th, 2022 Life Wins! One of the most unjust decisions in American history has finally been overturned. In the five decades since Roe v. Wade was decided, we have made incredible advancements in medical technology that illustrate the humanity of the preborn: As early as 5 weeks, unborn babies in the womb have a heartbeat. By 10 weeks, the child has formed arms, legs, fingers, and toes. At 15 weeks the child has a fully developed heart, facial features, and can even yawn and hiccup. This is a child, and it deserves protection. Our God-given rights depend on safeguarding the first essential, inalienable right — the right to life. After nearly 50 years, Roe v. Wade is no longer the law of the land — June 24th will be remembered in our nation’s history as one of the greatest milestones in the fight for life. This is not the end of the fight, however, as overturning Roe v. Wade simply gives states the right to enact their own laws on abortion. We must continue the pro-life movement at the state level to ensure the innocent lives of the unborn are protected. You can watch my remarks HERE. Fighting Government Tyranny Our first priority in Congress must always be to keep the People free. This is why we swear an oath to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic." At a time when the Federal Government has outgrown its Constitutional mandate and a number of federal agencies have become corrupted through unchecked power, Congress passed a gun bill that further empowers the federal government by transferring authority from the people — I voted no. History should be our guide here, in that governments throughout history always use altruistic reasons for their accumulation of power — and sometimes even with the best of intentions — before that power is later corrupted against the people. Our Founders understood this, and gave us a Constitution to place guardrails on the Federal Government — NOT to be thrown out in times of crisis or tragedy — but rather specifically to keep Government in check in response to times of crisis and tragedy. And while this legislation included well-meaning attempts to expand mental health resources, it also included a number of troubling provisions, most notably provisions that encourage states to implement red flag laws. Texans should not have to subsidize unconstitutional red flag laws of other states like New York and California. Case in point, this week the Supreme Court ruled New York’s burdensome regulations on concealed carry permit holders was unconstitutional. The Second Amendment Caucus recently held a press conference where we discussed the ongoing fight to protect our fundamental rights. You can watch my remarks HERE. The Drug Crisis Reborn - And more deadly than ever After experiencing our nation’s first reduction in overdose deaths in many years during the Trump Administration, we are now in a full-blown epidemic with over 100,000 drug overdoses in our nation in the last year alone. I have repeatedly called for an Oversight Committee hearing on the effects of the border crisis. Unfortunately, the closest we’ve gotten this term was when the Democrat Committee Chair called Monday’s hearing on the impact of opioid overdoses in our country. The Office of National Drug Control Policy Director, Dr. Gupta, tried to dance around the fact that this surge in overdose deaths is directly connected to the Biden administration's open border policies — even as he asked Congress for more of your tax money to fix the problem the Administration has all but created. My focus in the hearing was to ensure he understood what we all know to be true about the fentanyl crises — tens of thousands of our fellow citizens are dying because cartels, supplied by China, have free reign on our southern border. You can watch my remarks HERE. Investigating the Baby Formula Shortage Last week, along with other Republicans on the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, I wrote a follow-up letter to White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain in response to the ongoing infant formula crisis after our initial letter was ignored. Likewise, our letters to the FDA and the Department of Health and Human Services were also ignored. When production at the Abbott facility was paused by the FDA, the Biden administration had no plan in place to deal with the inevitable shortage, despite knowing months in advance that there would be a shortage. American families are suffering due to incompetent leadership from the White House, and We The People are demanding answers. The full letter can be viewed HERE. In Other News: More SCOTUS Opinions: Last week, the Supreme Court issued two opinions (in addition to that of Dobbs) that protected the rights of Americans. First, they struck down a New York law that infringed on the Second Amendment by preventing citizens from exercising their right to carry a concealed weapon. The second opinion upheld that a high school football coach was within his rights to pray publicly, which he was previously fired for doing. Congratulations Vanessa!: Last week, the House of Representatives welcomed high school students from every congressional district to the Capitol to congratulate them on winning the 2022 Art Competition. Texas’s 27th district winner, Vanessa Salcido, submitted her artwork “Smiling Cowboy”, which is now hanging in the Capitol building. God Bless, Rep.
