John,
Last week, the far-right Supreme Court, unrestrained by precedent, reversed a basic fundamental freedom strongly supported by the public that will have far-reaching effects on the health and well-being of women and pregnant people, families and communities across the nation.
This decision will not only endanger women’s lives and the lives of anyone who can become pregnant, it will also serve to exacerbate economic inequality, further burdening individuals and families who are struggling to pay for life’s basic necessities and whose needs are underrepresented in our political system.
Healthcare and childcare are very costly, and the consequences of this decision will fall disproportionately on low-income women because the senators who voted for these Supreme Court justices are opposed to fully funding these vital programs and others, such as paid leave and more generous child tax credits.
These senators are supported by billionaires and corporations that fund both the anti-abortion movement and the continuation of our rigged economy.
Billionaire Jeffrey Yass has avoided at least $1 billion in taxes over six recent years, and funds “candidates who falsely say the 2020 election was stolen and seek to ban abortion.”[1]
Nike paid just a 3.3% federal income tax rate between 2018 and 2020 on $9 billion in profits[2] and has donated more than $267,000 to the anti-abortion movement and candidates.[3]
Coca-Cola paid just a 7.4% federal income tax rate last year on $3.4 billion in profits[4] and has donated $2.6 million to anti-abortion candidates and organizations.[5]
In the wake of this devastating Supreme Court ruling, funds across the country need our support to help people afford abortion services, travel and lodging. Will you join Americans for Tax Fairness in supporting the National Network of Abortion Funds with a donation today?
As Americans for Tax Fairness remains strongly committed to the fight for justice and economic equity for all people, we share the revulsion at this decision with the nation and join with the voices of our allies to call on Congress to codify Roe.
In solidarity,
Frank Clemente
