Elections matter. I know you know this.
When I put my name on the ballot in 2018, I thought it was the most important election in my lifetime. In 2020, I felt that way again. We all knew how high the stakes were then. And now, as we have seen over the last few weeks through the work of the House January 6 Committee how perilously close we came to having our voices and votes nullified by a President who refused to accept the results, I feel that way again.
I hope you agree this year’s midterms are just as important as any election we have had. It’s not a Presidential election year. But the stakes are as high as ever. Our democracy is on the line. As are our fundamental freedoms.
And with no Presidential race and no U.S. Senate race in Texas, my name will be the first one on the ballot in November. As the person at the top of the ballot, I am taking seriously my responsibility to get people to the polls and to help elect Democrats up and down the ballot. We’ve shown we can do it in 2018 and 2020, and we are going to do it again in 2022.
But that takes work. Whether it’s a strong field program to connect with voters in person or persuasive and motivating messages in the mail or online or on TV — as you’ve heard me say before — it all takes money.
