Hi John,
In 2019, following the horrific mass shooting in El Paso where twenty-three Texans died, Texas Democrats strongly urged Governor Abbott to call an emergency special session to address the violent criminals legally buying guns in our state. He refused, and Texas Republicans doubled down on their obsession with allowing bad guys access to weapons and leaving huge loopholes in our state’s gun safety laws.
Then a month ago, just days after purchasing an AR rifle on his 18th birthday, a gunman snuck through an unsecured door in Uvalde, Texas, and turned Robb Elementary School into a battlefield. This time, nineteen children and two teachers died.
Later the same week, Texas Republicans hosted the National Rifle Association convention in Houston and callously mocked Texans' immediate pleas for action. Again, Governor Abbott denied Democrats' calls for a special session on gun violence prevention, but responded with an obligatory special committee that isn't even empowered to move on the public's testimony.
One thing is extremely clear — to Greg Abbott and the Texas GOP — the political cost of doing what is right is far too high a price to pay to special interests.
The Republican's obsession has reached a dangerous fever pitch as gun violence ravages our nation. We know we can't rely on the Governor or the Texas GOP to act to save lives. That means we need all hands on deck — from federal to state to the county level – working together to make sure classrooms do not become warzones ever again.
Greg Abbott has the power to call a special session on gun violence prevention – but he hasn't. Chip in if you agree he should:
