John,
If you have been watching any of the January 6th Committee hearings on national TV or catching highlights on cable news, you probably saw Georgia election worker Shaye Moss tell the story of what happened to her and her mother, Ruby Freeman, in the aftermath of the 2020 election. The harassment and threats they have experienced for doing their jobs — like people going to Shaye’s grandma’s house to attempt a citizen’s arrest — is appalling. Unfortunately, Shaye’s story has become all too common among election officials and poll workers in virtually every state in the nation.
You might have also recently seen former Philadelphia City Commissioner Al Schmidt testify before the committee. He and his family received death threats after the 2020 election.
Al is one of the many courageous election officials and poll workers who are part of Issue One's new Faces of Democracy campaign, which we launched last week, to help these essential workers get their message out in Congress and across the country about the need for election protections and increased investment in America's election infrastructure.
And the campaign is already making big waves.
Help Faces of Democracy make an even bigger impact by donating today!
Faces of Democracy was exclusively introduced in this great Politico piece. Al Schmidt joined us on our “Swamp Stories” podcast to discuss the January 6th hearings, as well as how election lies have impacted him and other election workers. We launched our campaign video and a big digital ad buy to spread the word about the need to protect those who protect our elections.
Also, last week, some of the folks who are part of the campaign came to Washington, D.C. to make their case to members of Congress and the White House. They met with Senator Amy Klobuchar and other offices to tell their stories. Additionally, Philadelphia City Commissioner Lisa Deeley testified before the Committee on House Administration to discuss the damage that disinformation inflicts on our democracy.
We are excited and pleased by the positive start to this important campaign. But we won’t quit until election workers around the country have expanded protections against intimidation, threats, and harassment, and predictable and sufficient funding to continue to administer our elections safely, securely, and fairly.
We couldn't do any of this without you and your support. Can you pitch in $5 to help us boost our digital ad buy so that we can amplify the campaign’s work even further and get our message out to more people across the country?
Thanks for all you do,
Dokhi Fassihian Deputy Chief of Strategy and Program, Issue One
