Just in time for the holidays … President Trump is attacking science yet again.

He’s trying to give his pro-polluter EPA chief, Andrew Wheeler, the power to decide what science is — and isn’t — allowed to inform our country’s environment and public health protections.

If Trump and Wheeler are successful, they could undermine decades of progress in cleaning up our air, water, and land — tipping the scales in favor of polluters over our environment and our children’s health.

Trump and Wheeler’s rationale for this rule is that the EPA should only use publicly available data as the basis for its scientific findings. This may sound reasonable on its face, but here's the reality: many scientific studies rely on private, confidential data — medical studies, personal health data, and clinical reports — which cannot be made public.

Without medical data demonstrating the harmful impacts that polluters have on our health, the EPA will have to rely on industry-backed research — conducted by the very industries the EPA is tasked with regulating.

In Wheeler’s words, this rule is intended to promote “the highest-quality science.” But we know the truth: Trump and Wheeler are actually trying to give their polluter allies even more influence over environmental regulations and free reign to wreak havoc on our air, water, climate, lands, and health.

We can’t let this scheme move forward. Stand with the NRDC Action Fund and urge your representatives to do everything in their power to stop Wheeler and Trump’s attack.

Disgraced former EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt tried to enact a similar measure back in 2018 and failed. Now, Wheeler is expanding Pruitt’s proposal to cover both future and past EPA regulations.

Wheeler’s much more dangerous plan would let the EPA reopen and weaken existing safeguards for air, water, and public health, or sabotage these protections whenever they come up for renewal. Bedrock environmental protections like the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act could be quickly undermined or even dismantled.
