Dear Friend,

Over 2021, while continuing essential pandemic response, social movements increasingly got back into the streets.

They mobilized with the conviction that not doing so was too great a risk. With ever-intensifying climate chaos, crack-downs on civil society, war and militarization, gender violence, hunger, inequality, and more, the issues that drove them to mobilize were matters of life and death.

Through these actions, movements built power as they built community. Their efforts made a major impact, achieving critical wins in some cases, and keeping essential struggles going in others. Organizing continues across all sectors as I write, from Amazon workers to Amazonian communities.

As a supporter of Grassroots International, you have played a critical role in bolstering many of these struggles. That’s why I’m excited to share with you our 2021 annual report showcasing the inspiring and courageous work of our movement partners and allies that we have been honored to accompany.

Highlights of our 2021 work include:

  • Distributing upwards of $5.9 million to social movements
  • Accompanying mobilizations from the local to global levels
  • Defending human rights – with important wins in Brazil, Honduras, and beyond
  • Responding to crisis with emergency grants for movement-led disaster response and recovery
  • Advancing transformative visions – like agroecology, food sovereignty, and grassroots feminist economies for life
  • Working to decolonize philanthropy by amplifying movement voices, nurturing donor activism, and organizing with others to push for change within the sector

As the world feels on the brink of a precipice, social movements are both sustaining life through their practices and building power to radically transform the very systems threatening life. Now is the time to scale up movement-support infrastructure to match the enormity of the challenges at hand and the tremendous capacity for societal transformation that social movements have shown themselves to have. We thank you for joining us.

With deep gratitude,

Chung-Wha Hong

P.S. Our ability to sustain and nurture our programs depends on the generosity and commitment of champions like you. Strong continuity in support allowed us to maintain a high proportion of spending on grants, education, and program activities. Your continued support today will allow Grassroots International to remain an outspoken advocate for the human rights to land, water, and food.
