Friend, this Pride month has been bittersweet as we’re reminded of our queer and trans siblings who are being held in cages by ICE and CBP — including Jorge, whose story we want to share with you today.
Jorge Rondon Torrealba is a queer immigrant from Venezuela who has been detained for nearly a year in the Krome Detention Center in Florida, isolated from his home and community in New York.
The ICE director in Florida has allowed Jorge to remain imprisoned where he has faced sexual and gender based violence. Each day Jorge stays in detention, he remains at risk for further abuse.
If Jorge were deported, not only would he be completely uprooted from the only life he has known here in the United States, where he’s lived from 3 years old, he would face violence for being openly gay in Venezuela.
So, we sprung into action — we recently wrapped up a Day of Action where we drove 30,000 texts to DHS Secretary Mayorkas’ office to demand Jorge’s release.
We will never let up in the fight to hold ICE and CBP accountable for their cruelties and abuses, but we’ll need your help to continue uplifting stories like Jorge’s and making a difference.
Will you chip in $7 to help United We Dream Action keep up the fight to dismantle the deportation machine? Only together will we be able to fight for accountability and defund hate.
Thank you for supporting our work to build a better future for our communities.
Cynthia, United We Dream Action
