Starting July 1, IRS increases mileage rate for remainder of 2022 The IRS announced an increase in the optional standard mileage rate for the final 6 months of 2022 in recognition of recent gasoline price increases. Taxpayers may use the optional standard mileage rates to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business and certain other purposes, effective July 1, 2022. The announcement also includes the new rate for deductible medical or moving expenses (available for active-duty members of the military). 2. Here’s what businesses need to know about the enhanced business meal deduction The IRS encourages businesses to begin planning now to take advantage of tax benefits available to them when they file their 2022 federal income tax return. This includes the enhanced business meal deduction. 4. IRS continues work on inventory of tax returns Following intensive work during the past several months, the IRS recently announced it will soon complete processing on a key group of individual tax returns filed during 2021. 5. IRS expands voice bot options for faster service, less wait time The IRS recently announced its expanded voice bot options to help eligible taxpayers easily verify their identity to set up or modify a payment plan, while avoiding long wait times. The agency has been using voice bots on numerous toll-free lines since January, allowing taxpayers with simple payment or notice questions to get what they need quickly and avoid waiting.
