"Chip in to elect Democratic governors across the country." - Chair Roy Cooper

Hi, team. I’m Roy Cooper, Governor of North Carolina and Chair of the DGA, and I have an important update on the fight to protect abortion.

Last week, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, ripping a Constitutional right away from millions. Now far-right Republicans are taking the opportunity to push for new and increasingly restrictive abortion laws. They want to criminalize abortion and punish individuals and their doctors.

These shameful attacks mean our most fundamental rights are now on the ballot. And the November midterm elections will be even more important than we imagined.

We have time to fight back, team, but the work starts now. Abortion rights will be decided in the states – which makes our work more urgent than ever before. This is why this is so important, team: this year, three-quarters of our nation’s governors are up for election. There are 36 races across the country, including those in key states like Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Georgia.

Each race could determine the future of voting rights, reproductive health care, and gun safety.

And Democratic governors are taking action. I’ve already vetoed anti-abortion legislation in my home state of North Carolina, as has my Democratic colleague Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers. In Michigan, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has filed a historic lawsuit to repeal a 1931 abortion ban. And in New Mexico, Nevada, and Illinois, they’ve signed legislation guaranteeing the right to an abortion in their states.

I’m proud of our efforts to stop this shameful attack on our rights, but the fight is far from over. And I need backup.
