I wish today were a day where we could focus on celebrating the incredible work of our movement to save lives from gun violence. The bill that Congress passed — and I wrote — is both groundbreaking and life-saving.

But I know that the actions of a right-wing majority on the Supreme Court have many of us scared and worried for our country’s future.

I fear these justices are now mere politicians in robes. The Constitution to them is just a tool to help them impose their political views on the entire country. The implausible inconsistencies of last week’s guns and abortion rulings are both sickening and revealing. It’s hard to believe that guns now have more rights than women in America.

On the day that we finally broke the logjam in Congress and passed the most significant gun safety legislation in nearly 30 years, the Supreme Court overturned a century’s old law to push their own agenda and open the floodgates on public carry of firearms.

Then on Friday, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and gutted the nationwide protection of abortion rights. In an instant, millions were left without access to safe, legal abortion.

If you want to take action right now, consider donating to the National Network of Abortion Funds today to help ensure as many women as possible have the ability to choose, and access abortion when they need it.

This last week has been a roller coaster. I am so proud of our anti-gun violence movement and the survivors, parents and activists who led the way to pass the historic Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. I’m so grateful for what we did together. We passed and President Biden signed a bill that breaks a 30-year logjam and saves lives.

There were so many setbacks and heartbreaks along the way. More lives were lost than should have ever been lost. But you kept pressing forward and never quit. And my hope is this bill provides some amount of justice or solace for the families who have lost loved ones to this epidemic.

And we’re not done fighting — to end gun violence or codify a federal right to abortion. It’s going to be tough. But the lesson for me, in the wake of the passage of the gun safety bill, is that you never back down if your cause is righteous.

Every best wish,

Chris Murphy
