Dear John,
On Monday in San Antonio, at least 51 migrants died after enduring temperatures of over 100 degrees and sweltering conditions in a semitruck. Several others, including children, were hospitalized.
This loss of life is horrific. President Biden and Congress must do everything in their power to stop these tragedies from happening.
Tell President Biden and Congress: Protect migrant lives and restore the right to asylum!
Today there are no safe avenues to migrate to the United States. Over the past decade, lawmakers have adopted racist border policies that effectively block migrants from exercising their right to seek asylum. This response has forced migrants to take dangerous routes—through mountains, deserts, and the ocean—to seek safe harbor. Many face extreme heat, violence, kidnappings, and even death.
The anti-immigrant policy known as Title 42 has worsened this humanitarian disaster. In 2020, the Trump administration implemented this policy under the guise of protecting public health during the pandemic. But over the past two years, Title 42 has made it nearly impossible for migrants to seek asylum at the border. Many have been deported to the conditions they fled, while some have been stranded in makeshift camps at the border.
Now the U.S. House of Representatives has taken steps to indefinitely extend Title 42. That’s even though the border is now open for other travel purposes. Extending this policy further endangers the lives and rights of migrants.
Our elected officials need to hear from us today. We cannot allow one more migrant to lose their life seeking the safety and peace we all deserve.
Tell elected officials: End Title 42 to save lives and restore the right to asylum!
In peace,
