Dear John,
After more than three months, negotiations aimed at reviving the Iran nuclear deal have resumed this week in Doha, Qatar. This is favorable news, though considerable challenges remain in resealing the deal and ensuring sanctions are lifted.
Last week, NIAC joined 15 organizations - including J Street, Indivisible, and the Quincy Institute - in sending a pointed letter to President Biden [[link removed]] , warning about the consequences of continuing Trump’s sanctions on Iran and underscoring that it is his responsibility to fulfill his campaign commitment to reseal the Iran nuclear deal.
This is just one of our many recent efforts to hold the Biden administration accountable in their commitment to avert a march to a disastrous war and restore the nuclear agreement. We are deeply disappointed that President Biden has delayed doing what is necessary to restore the deal and lift sanctions that continue to punish ordinary Iranians.
However, the resumption of in-person negotiations - even if they are likely to be brief - is welcome news. It follows a trip from the European Union’s Foreign Policy Chief, Josep Borrell, to Tehran over the weekend to shake the negotiations out of their recent stasis. Unlike previous nuclear deal discussions in Vienna, only the European Union, Qatar, the United States, and Iran are participating in the indirect negotiations happening in Doha.
A breakthrough can still happen in the weeks ahead. It will take strong will and courage to clear the remaining hurdles and reach the finish line, but you can trust that NIAC will continue to speak up and mobilize for Iranian Americans and everyone who seeks peace between the U.S. and Iran.
We will continue to provide you updates as the outcome of negotiations in Doha becomes clear. Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Ryan Costello
Policy Director, NIAC Action
