All MoCo DSA members:
Our DSA chapter is going to be canvassing for Bernie Sanders this Saturday, Dec. 7 in MoCo! The DSA for Bernie working group will meet at the Wheaton metro stop at noon. Join fellow DSA members to talk about Bernie, Medicare for All, and other issues with MoCo residents! More info and RSVP here.
Our next MoCo DSA branch meeting will be held at the Silver Spring Library on Sunday, December 15 at 2:00 PM! DSA-endorsed Maryland state delegates Gabriel Acevero and Vaughn Stewart will be guest speakers - they will share their experiences in the General Assembly and discuss plans for the upcoming legislative session, including bills on police accountability, funding public housing, and more. RSVP here - don't miss it!
In early 2019 we demanded an end to the unconscionable tax breaks that private country clubs with golf courses receive in Maryland. You may remember that we protested in front of private clubs in MoCo. Private golf courses are not a public good - they should not be paying a lower tax rate than the working class. We're gearing up to start speaking out on this issue again, since the once-a-year Maryland legislative session starts next month - stay tuned!
Upcoming events:
Sunday, December 15 from 2 pm-4:30 pm at Silver Spring Library: MoCo DSA Branch Meeting
Please join us at our monthly branch meeting to hear about state-level legislation from DSA members and state delegates Gabe Acevero and Vaughn Stewart! Details and RSVP here.
Wednesday, December 18 from 7 pm-9 pm in downtown Silver Spring: Rent Control campaign meeting
We'll meet to discuss the next steps in our rent control campaign - we are gaining support from organizational and elected allies in the County, and will be making plans for our public launch of the campaign in 2020! Email us for exact location info.

Good Reads:
From The Appeal: "Community Policing Is Not The Answer" by Philip V. McHarris. "Investing billions of government dollars into programs that embed police in Black communities will not reduce police violence, nor repair years of injustice. On the contrary, the strategy further floods communities with police and legitimizes an institution that is centered on punishment and control."
From ProPublica: "The New Debtors Prisons: They Loan You Money. Then They Get A Warrant For Your Arrest." by Anjali Tsui. "High-interest loan companies are using Utah’s small claims courts to arrest borrowers and take their bail money. It’s against the law to jail someone because of an unpaid debt. Congress banned debtors prisons in 1833. Yet, across the country, debtors are routinely threatened with arrest and sometimes jailed."
From Jacobin: "The Real Barack Obama Has Finally Revealed Himself" by Luke Savage. "Barack Obama is using his post-presidency to attack the Left and protect the status quo. The historical myth believed by so many liberals that Obama was a progressive leader who was hemmed in by the presidency's political constraints is collapsing fast."
