Republican Gubernatorial Races in Illinois, New York Will Be Tough, Yet Winnable

New York Post: Illinois Democrats got the opponent they wanted for incumbent Gov. J.B. Pritzker Tuesday as state Sen. Darren Bailey clinched the GOP gubernatorial primary. Pritzker, a billionaire heir to the Hyatt hotel fortune, is already a heavy favorite to win a second term in November (New York Post). NBC: Nine months after she stepped into the job of New York governor as a relative unknown, Democrat Kathy Hochul easily locked up her party’s nomination Tuesday, setting her on an expected glide path to win the office in November. She faces U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin, who won the Republican Party’s nomination Tuesday. Zeldin is a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump and was among the Republicans in Congress who voted against certifying the 2020 election results. The Long Island congressman will try to become the first Republican elected governor in New York since Gov. George Pataki was reelected in 2002 (NBC). Oklahoman: Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt will face state schools Superintendent Joy Hofmeister in the general election for governor after both candidates skated to easy victories Tuesday (Oklahoman). Pro-Life Centers, Churches Under Attack From Pro-Abortion Terror Groups

Catholic Vote: More than thirty pregnancy resource centers and offices of pro-life groups have been attacked since a draft Supreme Court opinion overturning Roe v. Wade was leaked in early May. Pro-abortion domestic terrorists have claimed responsibility — and are promising more attacks in a “summer of rage.“ The pregnancy resource centers, which provide free medical and financial support to pregnant and new mothers, have been spray-painted with pro-abortion and anarchist messages and symbols. Several have been set on fire. Other pro-life groups which advocate for the right to life have also had their offices vandalized. The attacks appear to be organized under the umbrella of two domestic terror groups — Jane’s Revenge and Ruth Sent Us — which have arisen since the Supreme Court opinion leak was published on May 2, 2022. Many of the attacks have similar messages, including “If abortions aren’t safe, neither are you” (Catholic Vote). Andy Ngo: Portland: The @MomChildPDX Center was vandalized & smashed up by #Antifa at the riot overnight. The center provides free services to expecting & single parents facing housing & refugee issues, domestic violence & poverty. Antifa view them as an enemy (Twitter). Rev. Dean Nelson: Blue Ridge Pregnancy Center, in Virginia, was vandalized last night by pro-abortion domestic terrorists. This type of destruction does nothing to scare the #prolife movement. It only strengthens our resolve to love & serve (Twitter). Fr. Patrick Mary Briscoe: St. Patrick Parish in Philadelpia, served by @opeast, was vandalized last night. Please pray for those who are afraid, who are suffering, for mothers who need our love and care, and for conversion of hearts and minds (Twitter).

Turkey Agrees to Welcome Finland and Sweden Into NATO

Axios: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan agreed Tuesday to lift his objection to Sweden and Finland joining NATO, paving the way for the two Nordic nations to begin the accession process. Driving the news: The leaders of the three countries signed a trilateral memorandum on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in Madrid confirming Turkey would support Sweden and Finland’s accession after weeks of negotiations over counterterrorism and arms exports. The big picture: Sweden and Finland moved rapidly to apply to NATO in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, reversing decades of security policy and opening the door to the alliance’s ninth expansion since 1949 (Axios). Associated Press: Turkey hailed Tuesday’s agreement as a triumph, saying the Nordic nations had agreed to crack down on groups that Ankara deems national security threats, including the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, and its Syrian extension. It said they also agreed “not to impose embargo restrictions in the field of defense industry” on Turkey and to take “concrete steps on the extradition of terrorist criminals.” Turkey has demanded that Finland and Sweden extradite wanted individuals and lift arms restrictions imposed after Turkey’s 2019 military incursion into northeast Syria. Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde told reporters that “all the parties showed an incredible willingness to get there and were constructive and we made it clear that we take these concerns about terrorist attacks … seriously” (Associated Press).

Top Aid to Mark Meadows Testifies Trump Wanted to Go to the Capitol on Jan 6

Wall Street Journal: Cassidy Hutchinson, a onetime top aide to White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, testified that former President Donald Trump was warned that members of the crowd attending his rally on Jan. 6, 2021, were heavily armed and still directed them to march toward the Capitol. The 25-year-old former White House aide also said she was told that Mr. Trump insisted on going to the Capitol with his supporters, even as officials, ultimately successfully, tried to stop him. Ms. Hutchinson recounted a dramatic altercation in the president’s limousine, known as “the beast,” after his Secret Service detail refused to drive him to the Capitol due to safety concerns. She said Tony Ornato, White House deputy chief of staff, told her Mr. Trump tried to grab the steering wheel of the vehicle and lunged at Robert Engel, head of his detail, after Mr. Engel told him he wouldn’t take him to the Capitol (Wall Street Journal). Peter Alexander of NBC: A source close to the Secret Service tells me both Bobby Engel, the lead agent, and the presidential limousine/SUV driver are prepared to testify under oath that neither man was assaulted and that Mr. Trump never lunged for the steering wheel (Twitter). National Review: Earlier in the day, White House lawyers urged speechwriters not to include talk about marching to the Capitol in Trump’s address, Hutchinson testified. She said Trump wanted to say things like, “Fight for Trump,” “We’re going to march to the Capitol,” and other words about Vice President Mike Pence. White House lawyer Eric Herschmann said it would be “foolish” to indulge some of Trump’s requests. White House counsel Pat Cipollone said it would be a mistake to march to the Capitol, according to Hutchinson (National Review).
