It's clear my Republican opponent isn't fighting for us. Between comments about gutting Social Security "behind closed doors" to being "very proud" of her attempts to defund Planned Parenthood, she isn't making progress for our families.

But this race is about more than taking back the Senate. For me, my opponent's attacks on services thousands of Americans rely on are personal.

My first husband, a union electrical worker, died in a tragic workplace accident at a time when I had one kid and another on the way. Social Security survivor benefits helped keep us out of poverty.

I know first-hand you don't stop giving a hand up to people so you can give handouts to the super-wealthy and corporate special interests. When I hear my opponent say she wants to gut the program that kept my family afloat, it gets me hot under the collar. And it reminds me why I'm running.

While Republicans insist on playing political games with programs like Social Security that help Americans when they need it, I'm committed to protecting those programs.

And it's not just Social Security -- on issue after issue my right-wing opponent has sided with McConnell and far-right Republicans. People are fed up and that's why our race is now a single-digit race.
