There is a saying in Haitian Creole about the power of consistent effort: “Piti piti, zwazo fè nich li.” In English, that’s “Little by little, the bird builds its nest.” 

As the interim executive director of Zanmi Lasante (PIH in Haiti), I see the evidence of that wisdom. Steady, committed partnerships lead to astonishing progress. Here’s an example:

After 2010, when we built a 350-bed world-class public teaching hospital here in rural Haiti, we knew a single investment, no matter how massive, could never be enough to create the change we knew was necessary.

 The most important investments came before we broke ground and after construction was finished. They were the daily efforts of thousands, over decades. 

Today, the internationally accredited University Hospital in Mirebalais, Haiti is a pillar of the national health system, and a center of excellence where generations of local clinicians train and practice.

And it sits in the center of a vibrant health system, where people from every walk of life receive care each day for ailments as maddeningly common as childhood malnutrition and as complicated as cancer and HIV. 

Then, when an earthquake struck last summer, monthly giving helped us respond immediately.
