Since Nessel was elected as Michigan’s Attorney General in 2018, she has worked tirelessly to defend the LGBTQ+ community by challenging discriminatory laws and launching Michigan’s first Hate Crimes Unit.
Before taking office, Nessel served on high-profile civil rights cases like DeBoer v. Snyder, in which she successfully argued to strike down bans on same-sex marriage and adoption in Michigan.
Later, DeBoer v. Snyder’s ruling influenced the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage in Obergefell v. Hodges – Nessel’s work helped achieve marriage equality for millions across the country!
