Friend,
At a time when gas and grocery costs are sky high, Congress should be focused on helping Americans struggling.
Last week in Congress was busy, but we continued to fail to have hearings on how we can helping working families by lowering costs. One of my biggest concerns is Congress continues to ignore inflation and the problems it is causing American families.
I shared my frustrations at a recent committee hearing, and offered solutions to get us headed back in the right direction.
Steil: Inflation is Punching Americans in the Face, Groceries and Gas
Continue to Rise
During a mark-up in the Financial Services Committee on legislation that would not help to bring costs down, I addressed the higher costs that continue to punch Wisconsin workers and families in the face. I recently spoke to a woman in South Milwaukee filling up her tank and asked "What does it cost to fill up your car?"
Her response: "I don't know, because I've only got $40, and $40 doesn't fill up my tank."
We need to act on high energy costs. Whether it is at the pump, or paying our electric and heating bills, our policies must change. We need to unleash American energy, encourage domestic production here in the United States, and promote an "all of the above" approach.
We need to change course in our policies.
Steil: We Need to Keep Taxes Simple
The Select Committee on the Economy held a hearing focused on tax policy and the decisions we should be making to encourage economic growth. It is my belief that we need to make sure our tax code remains fair and simple, and rewards hard-working Americans.
Our tax code should reward work and encourage growth. If we follow this path, we can bring those at the bottom into the middle class.
