John,
As Pride Month comes to a close, we want to take some time to recognize the roots of this month-long celebration of LGBTQ+ communities.
Over 50 years ago, the Stonewall Uprising took place in response to police raids occurring in LGBTQ+ spaces. Led by trans women of color such as Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson, these protests signified a turning point where the fight for LGBTQ+ rights became a revolution — and today Pride Month is celebrated during the month of June in honor of them.
As we reflect on the leaders of the first Pride, we want to offer a reminder that our advocacy and willingness to take action must extend beyond the month of June. Our work must continue year-round, and includes everything from getting involved with your local GLSEN chapter [[link removed]] to volunteering in your community. You can also make a donation [[link removed]] to help support our work year-round as we fight for safe and inclusive schools.
Thank you for spending this Pride with us. We look forward to continuing the fight for liberation all year round with you.
In solidarity,
Melanie Willingham-Jaggers (they/she), Executive Director of GLSEN
