Over the past few months, we’ve emailed you about the various goings-on within the Michigan GOP. And as June comes to an end, we thought it would be a perfect time to recap an extremely chaotic few months.
To sum up:
In April, the Michigan GOP held their nominating convention, and conspiracies – like denying the results of the 2020 election – were front and center. A chaotic process exposed some serious fractures within the party and left longtime conservatives feeling alienated. Cracks in the system are more and more apparent.
The DeVos family came bursting back onto the political scene, including former Trump Education Secretary Betsy DeVos. Our opponent has been a consistent supporter of her initiatives in the state legislature, including defunding our schools, and coincidentally… the DeVos family not only hosted Barrett for a fundraiser, they supported his campaign to the tune of $50,000 in one day!
That’s not where the chaos stops. 5 out of 10 GOP gubernatorial candidates, including some of the would-be frontrunners, didn’t get enough nominating petition signatures to get on the ballot. There were thousands upon thousands of fraudulent ballot signatures. The party that has spent so much time claiming "fraud" in the 2020 election actively sought to use fraud to get on the ballot .
But it doesn’t stop there. Recently, one of the remaining gubernatorial candidates was *arrested* for his involvement in the January 6th riots at the U.S. Capitol. The speaker of the Michigan Senate was subpoenaed by the January 6th committee, where he was asked, in part, about a trip that he made (along with Elissa's opponent) in November 2020 to the White House for a meeting with Trump to discuss the results of the election.
It’s enough to make your head spin, and these are only the highlights of the last few months. All of this makes it clear – what was once the party of Lincoln has lost its bearings, and they’re not capable of leading us through such a critical moment.
