Just this week, we learned from climate scientists that parts of the Arctic are warming 5 to 7 times faster than other parts of the world — an effect that can bring even more extreme weather to billions of people across the globe.
Early stage research is being done into the ramifications of a rapidly warming Arctic. Some scientists suspect that it is resulting in slowing the jet stream, which in turn is responsible for some of the droughts, heat waves, and flash flooding the Northern Hemisphere has experienced in recent years. Melting Arctic sea ice has already been linked to wildfires in the western U.S., European blizzards, and intensifying rainfall during India’s monsoons.
We’ve always known that climate change poses an existential threat. These new statistics underscore just how great the danger is if we fail to act. Brutal wildfires, unseasonal blizzards, and severe drought and floods have taken over many peoples’ daily lives. These extreme weather events are already impacting us now . Our future reality will be unlivable if we allow them to get out of hand.
SEEC members are acting right now to bring attention to this urgent crisis and pass real, substantive policy in the House in this race against the clock to get the problem under control. Will you contribute so they can stay in Congress, pressing progress on these important priorities, John? [[link removed]]
DONATE [[link removed]]Our earth’s climate patterns are deeply interconnected. What happens in one continent — or even one country — doesn’t stay there. When we make a commitment to fighting climate change in America, we help push the global community forward, too. And it’s clear from this data of alarming warming rates in the Arctic that the time for global action is now.
