Hi Friend,
You may have heard the news: last week a devastating 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck the Khost and Paktika provinces of Afghanistan. Home to more than a million people, reports suggest hundreds of people were killed and 1,600 more injured, and those numbers are continuing to rise.
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is already on the ground and responding to this disaster—setting up a 24-hour clinic to stabilize patients, supporting outpatient activities, and providing psychological first aid for survivors.
Now we are looking at solutions to ensure safe water and adequate sanitation to the community and health facilities.
Friend, you know that the need for support in Afghanistan was already high. Decades of conflict, recurring natural disasters, widespread internal displacement, extreme poverty, and violence have left people there struggling to access even basic medical care.
MSF has never stopped providing care here, and we anticipate this earthquake will be another major blow to the country's already fragile health system.
As the aftermath of the earthquake continues to unfold, the health needs of victims are evolving. Dehydration and diarrhea caused by a lack of safe drinking water are a growing concern for those affected. Our team is looking for solutions to respond to this mounting issue.
We will keep you informed as we continue our emergency response to this disaster. As always, thank you for supporting MSF in our mission to deliver care where it's needed most. We wouldn't be able to do this work without you.
This email was sent from the U.S. section of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), an international independent medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural and man-made disasters, and exclusion from health care.
