Last Friday was a sad day, friend.

The Republican-controlled Supreme Court has confirmed their cruel decision:
Roe v. Wade is now officially overturned, eliminating the constitutional right
to safe and legal abortion.Let me be clear; this is a direct assault on women’s
rights and an attack on the majority of Americans who believe in reproductive
freedom.

I am deeply heartbroken and angered by the gravity of today’s decision. The
consequences of this ruling cannot be understated – eliminating access to safe,
legal abortion will exacerbate existing inequalities in communities of color,
low-income populations, and all marginalized groups already facing obstacles to
obtaining reproductive care.

We need to act now. Congress must protect access to reproductive care
nationwide by codifying the rights granted byRoe into law. To do this, we need
to keep the Democratic majority in Congress. With this Court’s partisan ruling,
a Democratic Congress is the only way we can prevent the GOP from furthering
their plan to criminalize abortion and eliminate access to contraception
nationwide.

In California, we are committed to keeping abortions safe, legal, and
accessible. But more than 36 million Americans across this country live in
Republican-controlled states where trigger laws related to the Supreme Court’s
ruling will soon make abortion completely illegal. That is why it is so
important that Democrats in Congress are able to put a federal law in place
that protects a woman’s right to make her own decisions over her own body.

I promise to continue fighting on behalf of women everywhere, to protect their
right to choose, and access to safe and legal abortions.

In solidarity,
Doris Matsui
