Systems for Action to host a discussion of the pandemic’s disparate effects on health equity. Research experts from each program presented evidence-based answers from pandemic-related policies, practices, and data to help explain these disparities. Lessons learned demonstrate how some of these policies and practices worsen long-standing health disparities and how to change that moving forward.

Effects of Medicaid expansion on unemployment-related loss of health insurance

The COVID-19 pandemic and associated economic fallout led to increased unemployment rates and long periods of uninsurance among people who lost their jobs, but little is known about the effects of Medicaid expansion on unemployment-related coverage loss. Researchers at the University of Kentucky investigated and found, in the first year of the pandemic, people who lost their jobs in Medicaid expansion states were 73 percent less likely to become uninsured compared with states that did not expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act.

Short-term effects of the earned income tax credit on children’s health

Think homelessness is unsolvable? Think again: Researchers at the Urban Institute funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Evidence for Action program have found that a well-targeted supportive housing intervention can lead to better results for individuals and communities. When offered housing first with supportive services, people quickly enter housing and stay there. They also experience many longer-term benefits, including reduced jail time and decreased interactions with law enforcement. This approach ultimately provides a better use of taxpayer dollars for tackling homelessness—as associated costs are largely offset by savings in other services such as jail stays, court costs, police time, and local emergency services.
