Dear Friend,
There’s no sugar coating it: the Earth’s climate is in crisis .
Here in Maine, we are witnessing the effects firsthand.
The Gulf of Maine is warming faster than 99.9 percent of the world’s oceans , affecting our lobstering, clamming, shrimp and oyster industries. Extreme weather events and rising sea levels are devastating Maine’s coastal communities, as well as our crucial tourism economy.
Beyond that, our precious ecosystems are in peril: Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences has concluded that 75 percent of Maine’s wildlife faces endangerment and extinction due to the climate crisis.

When the world is on fire, it is not enough to bring a watering can to the edges of a crisis and call it a “solution.” The world needs a Green New Deal.
Under a Green New Deal, Maine’s natural resources will work to our advantage, helping us lead the way in providing tidal, solar, wind, and hydroelectric energy production. We will end the $20 billion our government spends each year subsidizing the fossil fuel industry, and invest instead in green technologies and infrastructure that will grow our economy and keep our planet alive.
This would make Maine a leader not only in renewable energy production, but in training the workforce of the future.

The climate crisis is upon us today . Not at some distant point in the future. It is current, it is urgent, and it is life or death.
Some politicians say we can’t afford to save our planet. I say we can’t afford not to.
In Solidarity,
Betsy
