John,
It's been a busy week and Michelle is on the road, so we wanted to update you on her actions this past week in Washington.
What joy! Life won!
Nearly fifty years after the incorrect Roe v. Wade decision, the power of states to legislate their values has finally returned to legislatures across the country. The Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision is historic. This is a victory for state rights, the Constitution, and, above all, the sanctity of human life. There has never been an explicit constitutional right to abortion. That’s why Michelle considered Roe v. Wade so egregiously wrong from the onset. Last week's decision reasserts the right of popularly elected state legislatures across the country to choose their own values and aspirations.
Given the recent increase in threats directed at Supreme Court justices, their families, and pro-life organizations across the country, it is clear that Congress must do more to combat political violence.
- Michelle took decisive action by voting for legislation to provide police protection for the families of Supreme Court justices.
- She also signed a letter with her Republican colleagues calling for a Justice Department investigation into domestic terrorist attacks on pro-life organizations.
It is imperative for us to take these threats seriously, give our justices and their families the security they need, and condemn these acts of violence.
Last week, the Supreme Court delivered a major decision regarding our Second Amendment rights. In a 6-3 decision delivered on ideological lines, the court struck down a restrictive New York State regulation that required proper cause to apply for open carry permits. This ruling is a major win for Second Amendment rights! Law-abiding citizens have a constitutional right to defend themselves and their families. Moving forward, Americans will have the right to legally carry a firearm for self-defense and no longer need to jump through regulatory hoops to justify their right to defend themselves.
Unfortunately, despite this progress, the Senate passed their gun-control legislation and sent it to the House. While Michelle believes we must do more to protect schools from violence, she cannot support legislation that would strip away due process and impede upon our enshrined right of self-defense. The red flag laws do just that. Michelle took to the floor early Friday morning to lead the Republican debate against this bill. She called for immediate consideration of the Stop To Secure Every School Act, critical legislation that would harden schools, support active shooter training, and provide mental health funding. Democrats rejected this bill, which would keep students safe while also protecting our Second Amendment rights. They passed their blatant infringement of lawful gun owners' rights so they could say they "did something."
We look forward to seeing you at your local community events this summer.
Thank you for your continued support!
