Dear Friend,
[[link removed]]
Over the past weekend for Pride, we celebrated everyone, no matter who they love or their gender identity. Even while recognizing that we have made progress in the fight for inclusion and equality for all, we are stunned by the Supreme Court’s decision to overrule Roe v. Wade .
As Supreme Court Justice Ginsburg famously put it, our nation’s story is one of working towards a more inclusive “We The People”. This is what our Constitution means when it commits us to work towards a more perfect union.
The overruling of Roe is unsettling for many reasons. But this one stands out: contrary to our history of progress and expanding freedoms, this decision takes freedom away from us. And, as Justice Thomas urged in his concurrence, the reasoning of this decision threatens many other hard fought freedoms that are deeply personal to each of us.
When faced with setbacks like this, I remain inspired by Justice Ginsburg, including her commitment to dialogue and respectful engagement. With her in mind, I have written this blog post [[link removed]] on how we should approach this moment. And at the Pride March this Sunday, I made my remarks [[link removed]] with her in mind.
We cannot repair our world alone. Yet we must each do our part–working to protect our freedoms, combat discrimination, address rising hate, and advance the American promise of liberty and justice for all. I will never give up on our core American ideal of freedom and opportunity for all. And I continue to stand with you to fight to preserve it, for all of us.
