John -
Last Tuesday, we saw incumbent Congressman Don Beyer win his primary for Virginia's 8th Congressional District against primary opponent Victoria Virasingh. We congratulate and look forward to working with Congressman Beyer this general election season and we thank Ms. Virasingh for all her efforts during her campaign.
Unfortunately, we also witnessed the Supreme Court overturn Roe v. Wade last week. This is our official statement:
"[The] decision by the U.S. Supreme Court striking down the right to abortion is nothing short of an egregious attempt to strip away constitutionally protected rights of people everywhere. We are appalled and enraged by this decision. And we fully condemn this assault by a group of extreme ideologues.
There are 13 states with trigger laws which will now go into effect. And state governments across the country, controlled by extreme Republican elected officials, are poised to follow suit. We’re already seeing it happen here in Virginia with Governor Glenn Youngkin declaring that he will seek legislation banning abortion after 15 weeks. Abortion is and remains legal in Virginia, and we’re going to fight to keep it that way.
We call on elected officials at every level of government to swiftly codify the right to abortion into law.
And we ask all Young Democrats to channel your rage into action. Donate to abortion funds and get involved with your local chapter. AYD will keep you updated on opportunities as we gear up to defend our majority in the upcoming midterms. The best way to preserve our democracy, is to get involved in it."
Remember again that abortion is still legal in Virginia and we must fight to keep it that way.
Please consider donating to the following abortion funds:
We'd also like to thank everyone who came our to our join Arlington Dems Black Caucus and AYD Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, an incredible time was had by all and we look forward to holding this event for years to come!
Finally, remember to join us for our Pride Month Happy Hour tonight at 7pm at Freddie's Beach Bar. We'll also be joined by Planned Parenthood Patient Advocate Kate Sanchez who will talk with us on some next steps now that Roe has been overturned.
