Dear Friend,
I am writing to you today regarding the historic victories for life and religious freedom that recently have been announced by the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS). I am deeply thankful for the wisdom and boldness of our Supreme Court Justices’ decisions in these highly consequential cases to uphold our Constitution and maintain the rights and protections it affords every American.
On Friday, June 24, 2022, the SCOTUS decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization was released. The Court upheld Mississippi’s law banning abortion after 15 weeks and rightly overturned the egregious precedent in Roe v. Wade, returning the issue of abortion to the states. Mississippi courageously led the effort to overturn Roe—what a proud moment for our great State!
I was honored to help lead the amicus brief signed by more than 200 Members of Congress in support of Mississippi’s law and asking the Court to overturn Roe, and I was proud to be able to join fellow pro-life leaders in Congress to speak in front of the Supreme Court on the day oral arguments were made. These and other demonstrations of support for the pro-life cause from Members of Congress and the pro-life community were a critical component of the overall effort to finally overturn Roe.
I am grateful for the tremendous leadership of Attorney General Lynn Fitch, the skillful arguments presented by Mississippi’s Solicitor General Scott Stewart, and all of our State’s leadership for their support of this monumental achievement.
As a Christian, I firmly believe that life is precious and a gift from God.
Psalm 139:13,14: “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well."
Jeremiah 1:5: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart….”
Therefore, I know that our work in the fight for life is not complete. I have successfully worked with my colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives to maintain critical pro-life protections in annual appropriations bills, cosponsored numerous pro-life bills to support the right to life of unborn children, and opposed the Biden Administration’s pro-abortion policies. I will continue to be a bold advocate for pro-life issues through my work in Congress.
Then today, SCOTUS ruled in favor of Coach Joe Kennedy, the high school football coach in Washington State who lost his job at a public high school due to his praying at the 50 yard line after games. In a 6-3 decision, SCOTUS determined that Coach Kennedy’s actions were indeed protected by the First Amendment. This decision was a significant victory for religious liberty in our nation.
Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote in the majority opinion: “Here, a government entity sought to punish an individual for engaging in a brief, quiet, personal religious observance doubly protected by the Free Exercise and Free Speech Clauses of the First Amendment.”
I was proud to join the amicus brief from Members of Congress in support of Coach Kennedy’s First Amendment protections in this case before the Supreme Court. I will always work to protect our religious liberties and all other foundational values enshrined in the Constitution of the United States through my role in the U.S. House of Representatives. My Christian faith is the source of these convictions.
My wife, Haley, and I join the State of Mississippi in celebrating these monumental decisions that will save countless lives and protect our religious freedoms for our futures and children’s futures. Would you help us share this wonderful news by forwarding this email to friends and family?
God bless you.
