Dear John,

Many people ask whether we should nominate a moderate or a progressive, but I think that’s a false choice. I think the choice is between fresh and stale. It’s not a traditional political argument, but rather a compelling emotional appeal, that will take the Democrats back to the White House next year.

And I’m the one to do the job.

Donald Trump is not just a politician, he’s a political phenomenon. And we need to create a phenomenon of our own—an uprising of consciousness among the American people that will match his emotional intensity, harnessing the “angels of our better nature” to override all threats to our democracy.

We need a candidate that represents something new, and amazing, and radically real. What is coming at us next year is not within the realm of what we have considered “normal,” and Democrats will have a difficult time defeating him with traditional political strategy. We need to do more than raise money, and we need to be more than “better on the issues.” We need to do—and be—so outrageously heartfelt that nothing outrageously heartless can stand in its midst.

And I’m the one to do the job.
