"Justice Thomas: SCOTUS ‘should reconsider’ contraception, same-sex marriage rulings"
The Supreme Court's heartbreaking decision to strike down Roe v. Wade and upend decades of settled law will undoubtedly have devastating and lasting repercussions for the most vulnerable and the most marginalized in our community.
And as many of us suspected and feared, it seems that SCOTUS's extremist-packed Court won't stop at Roe.
Now, almost immediately after stripping away the fundamental right to reproductive freedom, Justice Clarence Thomas has argued in a concurring opinion that the Supreme Court "should reconsider" its past rulings codifying rights to contraception access and same-sex marriage.
Here's the bottom line: In 2022 America, Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell – long-standing Court decisions granting the right to essential privacy and freedoms for millions of people across our nation – are at genuine risk of being struck down by the far-right few.
Team, today, I wish I were coming to you with a more optimistic tone regarding the state of our fundamental freedoms, but the truth is, we are stuck with a Supreme Court that includes Trump-appointed justices who have shown that they are not willing to listen to the majority of the American people who believe in upholding and protecting essential rights and liberties.
But I'll leave you with this:
The midterm election this November is perhaps one of the most critical elections America has ever seen. With decades of settled law on the line, we need to ensure that we protect our Democratic majority in Congress. We must elect Democrats up and down the ballot in order for us to keep moving forward.
It's on all of us to stand up for what's right. Add your name to our petition today if you agree with the majority of Americans who believe that love is love – and that everyone deserves access to reproductive healthcare no matter where they live.
