Last week was a difficult one, as Roe v. Wade was struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court. ICYMI, here was our Executive Director Brian K. Bond's statement after the Dobbs decision.

Now, for the last week of Pride, we're here with ways to connect, including a really wonderful episode of Something to Talk About Live, where we'll talk about PFLAG founder Jeanne Manford and a BEAUTIFUL new book highlighting her incredible story, and PFLAG's origins.

Save Sex Ed

Sex education is extremely effective at protecting our students and enabling them to make healthy choices, is widely supported by parents--and is also under attack, with a concerted disinformation campaign to remove sex education from schools.

Join an online learning session this Thursday, June 30th, from 12-1pm ET with our good friends at Advocates for Youth to learn more about how LGBTQ-inclusive and affirming sex education is critical to the health and well-being of all students and what you can do to get involved and stand in support of the sex ed our youth need and deserve.

Three Steps to Being a Better Reproductive Health Rights Advocate

After last week’s decision in Dobbs, which struck down Roe v. Wade, it’s critical to take action as an advocate for better reproductive health, including abortion access.

  1. Learn: Check out PFLAG National’s Policy Statements which includes details about our board-approved policies about reproductive health. Read up on your rights to protest, should you choose to take part in any demonstrations.
  2. Watch: Watch last week’s very timely episode of Something To Talk About Live! about the intersection of reproductive rights and LGBTQ+ rights. Check out our PFLAG Academy Online learning session on LGBTQ+ inclusive sex education.
  3. Share: Follow organizations fighting for civil rights and uplift their messaging about reproductive rights. Some groups to take a look at include Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, and the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights.

Advocacy

Thank your Representative for passing the LGBTQI+ Data Inclusion Act

The LGBTQI+ Data Inclusion Act will require the 107 federal agencies that use surveys to collect voluntary, self-disclosed information to include sexual orientation, gender identity, and variations in sex characteristics. It will also require agencies to review existing data collection tools that capture demographic information to add sexual orientation, gender identity and variations in sex characteristics, and to evaluate assessment tools and processes for demographic surveys. This legislation is critical to ensuring the LGBTQ+ community gets the support from federal programs it needs.

Call your Representative today and thank them, if they voted YES, and ask them to support it as it progresses to the Senate.

Something to Talk About...Live!

Jeanne Manford - Mother of a Movement

50 years ago, PFLAG founder Jeanne Manford made history when she first wrote an open letter to the New York Post in support of equal rights for LGBTQ+ people, and then became the first parent to publicly march in solidarity and support of rights for her gay son. Those actions sparked a movement of millions, eventually leading to the founding of the organization now known as PFLAG.

Join us this Thursday, June 30 at 4:30 PM ET / 1:30 PM PT for Something to Talk About Live where we will be discussing "The Mother of a Movement: Jeanne Manford--Ally, Activist, and Co-Founder of PFLAG", a new book from Magination Press by Rob Sanders, illustrated by Sam Kalda, which will be released this October. We're excited to welcome Rob Sanders and historian Eric Marcus ("Making Gay History") to the conversation!

You can watch live on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
