Today, Judge Porzio and the Supreme Court in Staten Island struck down the Our City, Our Vote Law (Local Law 11-2022) ([link removed]) , which granted over 800,000 eligible New York City residents with legal permanent status or work authorization the right to vote in municipal elections.

This comes as no surprise to us; the Republicans purposely took this lawsuit to a court they knew would be favorable to them and the outcome they wanted. Despite the passing of Local Law 11 ([link removed]) , Republicans, including both local elected officials and the Republican National Committee, set out to challenge the law because they knew that it would empower thousands of Black and brown immigrant New Yorkers to vote in municipal elections, a direct contradiction to their platform which encourages limiting decision making to as few people as possible.

Our immigrant New Yorkers know better than anyone the changes necessary to strengthen their communities, and they know exactly who to vote out of office when their priorities are not met. Barring immigrants from participating in municipal elections, but still depending on their essential contributions to rebuilding our economy after COVID-19, is cruel and immoral. That is exactly why we will be appealing Judge Porzio’s decision and ready to fight for over 800,000 eligible immigrant New Yorkers’ right to vote.
We know that Local Law 11 is completely legal and that is why we will prevail in securing the right for immigrants to vote in municipal elections. This fight isn't over — support us as we continue to ensure immigrant New Yorkers’ voices are heard in our electoral process.
