Join MDIFW Education and Outreach Supervisor, and naturalist, Laura Craver-Rogers at various locations across Maine to learn more about Maine?s wildlife and wild places. Open your senses and relax your mind as we meander through different MDIFW wildlife management areas and land trust properties across the state. We will look at birds, plants, insects, and other wildlife as we walk through the woods, forests, fields, and shorelines. You?ll also learn more about how these wild places are maintained, managed, and preserved to benefit a variety species and humans.

Join us for a walk around the beautiful fields and trails of this western Maine land trust property. The Foothills Land Conservancy preserve is designed for public use and conservation. As we make our way around the fields, we will keep our eyes out for songbirds, butterflies, and soaring hawks. The fields and forest edge provide ample habitat for various types of wildlife including small mammals and deer. Be sure to bring binoculars if you have them, some will be available if needed.

Scarborough Marsh Wildlife Management Area [ [link removed] ]

Join MDIFW and Maine Audubon staff for a delightful walk down a trail through Scarborough Marsh, a 3,100 acre estuary. It has the largest salt marsh in the state, the area is comprised of tidal marsh, salt creeks, freshwater marsh, and uplands. The marsh is particularly important for wildlife as a resting, breeding, and feeding ground. Along the way we will look for various species of birds such as shorebirds, wading birds, and songbirds. In addition, we will take a look at historical features and the important functions habitats like marshes provide for society. Bring binoculars if you have them, some will be available if you need them. Summer is a great time to explore the marsh.

Mt. Pisgah Conservation Area [ [link removed] ]

This property is owned by the Town of Winthrop and protected with an easement held by KLT. The forested summit of Mount Pisgah features the former Maine Forest Service fire tower, which was in use from 1949 to 1991. The tower provides spectacular 360 degree views. On a clear day you can see Mount Washington to the west and the Camden Hills to the east. Join us on this hike as we explore the forest and look for signs of small mammals, songbirds, and invertebrates.

Cobscook Bay Wildlife Management Area [ [link removed] ]

Join us Downeast for a fun exploration of the most eastern wildlife management area in Maine. The Cobscook Bay Wildlife Management Area is made up of 10 Units comprising approximately 2,300 acres of land, including tidal shoreline, freshwater wetlands and upland. Focal species for management include waterfowl, wading birds, shorebirds and island nesting seabirds. In addition, Cobscook Bay has the highest density of nesting bald eagles in the northeastern United States. The Horan Head Unit has views of Straight Bay and trails in a coastal spruce-fir forest. We could see signs of small mammals, songbirds, shorebirds, and more. Be sure to bring your binoculars if you have them, some will be available if needed.
