Shelby v. Holder was a devastating 2013 Supreme Court decision that gutted some of the key protections of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. So in 2015, Congress first introduced the Voting Rights Advancement Act to safeguard the protections we lost.
As a longtime supporter of voting rights, Suzan was proud to co-sponsor this crucial piece of legislation to protect our access to the ballot box and right to use our voice once and for all. But in a Republican-controlled House, it never received a vote - a not so distant reality from today.
Since last year, the Democrat-controlled House has passed voting rights legislation, twice, but the Senate has shut it down, twice. This might be a step further than 2015 but IT'S NOT NEARLY ENOUGH. It's not enough until voting rights protections reach the President's desk and are signed into law.
But to even have a chance of doing that, we need to keep our House majority andexpand our Senate majority so we can see these changes go into effect. We cannot afford to keep having these bills be struck down.
