Justice?
I like you have spent the last week thinking about the scales of justice. Originally Lady Justice was blindfolded for satirical purposes, to represent that she was blind to the injustice going on around her. There are mountains of injustice happening around us. I've spent the last decade advocating for the rights of the most marginalized people, babies, children and youth, women, and all of those people in communities that don't have access to the things they need in order to live healthy lives. We should be expanding access to healthcare, instead of limiting the options that members of our communities have available to them. I believe in your ability to consult with your health care providers to make the best possible decisions about the care that may be necessary for you and your families. It wasn't that long ago that I had a conversation with a woman in her 90s. She wanted to talk about reproductive healthcare, specifically abortion. She talked about how important it was that there was abortion care in her community, and the women she knew who became deathly ill or died from having abortions before they were legal. I also talked with a man whose partner made the decision to end her pregnancy without talking with him, and a man who shared the difficult story about his own birth and his mother's decision to keep him. These stories and the many stories I have listened to from people across the state illustrate the complexities of a topic that is usually talked about in polarizing ways. I have the privilege of living in a community where there is adequate access to women's and reproductive healthcare, where there are groups whose work is focused solely on making sure families have everything they need to raise healthy children, and where there are resources available so community members thrive. I realize that not everyone has the privilege of living in this type of community. I want you, and all of the people of the state of North Carolina to have what they need to live healthy lives. We won't always agree on the best path to get to this outcome. However, I believe that if we work together we will come up with solutions that will serve all of the people of our great state. A donation to this campaign will help me to continue sharing this message across the state. Thank you for joining me in the work of finding and maintaining solutions that ensure everyone has access to the resources they need to live healthy lives and thrive. Sincerely, Michelle Lewis Unaffiliated Candidate for the United States Senate Paid for by Lewis for Senate
