John, did you hear?
On Wednesday, Gov. Holcomb called for a special legislative session to convene on July 6, 2022, to act on his plan to return $1 billion to Indiana taxpayers.
Under his plan, each eligible taxpayer would collect about $225 in addition to $125 Hoosiers are currently receiving from the state’s automatic taxpayer refund. All told, each eligible Hoosier would receive about $350, while a married couple filing jointly would receive about $700.
“This is the fastest, fairest, and most efficient way to return taxpayers' hard-earned money during a time of economic strain. Indiana’s economy is growing and with more than $1 billion of revenue over current projections, Hoosier taxpayers deserve to have their money responsibly returned. I’m happy to be able to take this first step and look forward to signing this plan into law as soon as possible.” — Gov. Eric Holcomb
John, this is your money, and we’re glad Indiana is in a position to undertake this unprecedented return, and in doing so, provide more relief to Hoosiers than a three-month gas tax holiday.
To illustrate, experts indicate that suspending Indiana’s gas tax could result in a savings per gallon of up to $0.20. If you had a 16-gallon tank and filled up once a week for three months, you would save approximately $38.40; Governor Holcomb’s plan provides relief five-times that amount. Moreover, suspending the gas tax would unfairly benefit out-of-state drivers who would utilize our roads and then pass the burden of maintenance and construction solely onto Hoosier taxpayers.
Governor Holcomb’s plan is the fairest, fastest, and most efficient way to provide relief to Hoosiers.
