Two years after the murder of George Floyd and more than seven years after the death of Michael Brown, our communities are still being targeted and murdered by police with few if any consequences. Have you ever wondered how cops are so well protected when they break the law? 

Our latest video in our “How Cops Get Off” series—"The Protectors"—lays out how police have successfully developed a culture of silence, known as the Blue Wall of Silence—a no-snitching culture that allows them to cover up when they do anything wrong. The wall of silence is strengthened by institutions including prosecutors, police unions, and the police force themselves to escape accountability.

For too long we’ve been told the system exists to protect us, when in fact it is designed to protect cops. To radically rethink public safety, we need to first understand the system as it exists today.

Keeping our communities safe requires more than police or policing. We need increased transparency and accountability for those who protect and serve us. For our communities to thrive, we must redefine what safety means.
