Join NAS's Civics Alliance TODAY at 2 pm ET for the virtual launch of American Birthright: The Civics Alliance’s Model K-12 Social Studies Standards.

Every American student should be educated to be another Harry Truman—a high-school graduate who, without ever graduating from college, has a solid grasp of history and is capable of serving as an officer, a judge, a senator, and president.

Yet some state education departments are set on imposing state social studies standards that combine misguided pedagogical theory, low academic standards, and anti-American animus. Too many Americans emerge from our schools ignorant of America’s history, indifferent to liberty, and estranged from their country.

The National Association of Scholars’ Civics Alliance has created American Birthright: The Civics Alliance’s Model K-12 Social Studies Standards to inspire America’s state education departments to provide social studies standards that teach American students their birthright of liberty.

The launch event will feature David Randall, Executive Director of the Civics Alliance and coordinator of American Birthright; Nicole Neily, President and Founder of Parents Defending Education; Douglas Norlander, veteran social studies teacher; Sue Lucas-Peterson, South Dakota State Representative; and Jenna Robinson, President of the James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal.

Join NAS on Tuesday, July 5th, at 2 pm ET, for a discussion of John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath.

“There ain't no sin and there ain't no virtue. There's just stuff people do.”

Author and Steinbeck scholar Peter Lisca once noted that when it was published, Steinbeck's novel, "was a phenomenon on the scale of a national event. It was publicly banned and burned by citizens, it was debated on national radio; but above all, it was read." Why was the book so controversial? Who influenced Steinbeck's writings, and who did his writings influence? What makes The Grapes of Wrath a great American novel?

This webinar will feature Robert DeMott, Edwin and Ruth Kennedy Distinguished Professor Emeritus of English at Ohio University; Gary Scharnhorst, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of English at the University of New Mexico; and Susan Shillinglaw, Professor of English at San Jose State University. The discussion will be moderated by Richard Etulain, Professor Emeritus of History at the University of New Mexico.
