John,
Where do we go from here?
The overturning of Roe v Wade is devastating. People will die because of the Supreme Court’s decision and even with a Democratic House, Senate and Presidency, Democrats can’t make any progress on issues affecting people’s everyday lives.
Yes, we must vote and do what we can to maintain the House and expand our majority in the Senate, but we have to play the long game too. And that means building progressive state legislatures in both our blue and purple states.
Blue states aren’t setting the example they can right now. For example, Rhode Island has 25 sitting Democratic state lawmakers who voted against codifying Roe v Wade.
And we need to win our purple states so we can protect democracy in this crisis. As we know, Texas, Arizona, and Georgia all passed laws making it more difficult to vote.
Yes, we know there are shorter ways out of this mess through the House and Senate, but that still leaves us vulnerable in the future the same way we are today. If we want to guarantee this country’s future, we need to elect bold progressives within our state legislatures who aren’t afraid to lead and show this country what we can do. By doing so, we create healthy state legislatures, a bench of progressive candidates ready to run for federal office, and a country that we can be proud of.
Are you with us?
In solidarity,
Downballot Progress
