To Change Everything, It Takes Everyone

“Every time I write about social justice,” says Sierra Club executive director Michael Brune, “I hear from a few folks: ‘What does this have to do with the Sierra Club? Aren't we straying from our environmental mission when we oppose the border wall or show up for immigrant rights?

NAFTA Reboot a Windfall for Corporate Polluters

House speaker Nancy Pelosi recently said that a deal with the Trump administration on NAFTA 2.0 could be “imminent.” This NAFTA reboot would exacerbate NAFTA’s contribution to the climate crisis, encourage further outsourcing of pollution and jobs, offer handouts to corporate polluters, lock in fossil fuel dependency, and extend the Trump administration’s polluting legacy for years to come.

Time to Impeach and Remove

President Trump has proven to be a danger to our Constitution and democratic norms. He has engaged in bribery, abused the power of the presidency, and ignored the presidential oath of office that requires him to protect the Constitution.

Caribou Trump Trump

Each year, the Porcupine caribou herd undertakes the world’s longest land migration to reach its calving grounds in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Nevertheless, the Trump administration has been hell-bent on drilling in the refuge, suppressing scientific concerns and bragging that drilling was going to happen even though more extensive review is required. So the announcement from the Department of Interior that it will “miss its target … due to delays in the environmental review process” was music to our ears.

“But we know the fight isn’t over,” says Lena Moffitt, director of the Sierra Club’s Our Wild America campaign.

How Green Is My Christmas Tree?

"My family has always used the same artificial Christmas tree," writes Coral in Maryville, Tennessee. "I used to assume it was more environmentally friendly since it was reusable, but now I realize that some of the materials may contain harmful toxic chemicals. Also, wouldn't commercially farmed Christmas trees absorb more CO2 during their lifetimes as opposed to other crops? Is it more sustainable to buy a real Christmas tree or reuse an artificial one?"

Coal Ash Comeback

Last month, Trump’s EPA rolled back Obama-era regulations that limited contamination from the 737 toxic coal-ash sites in the US. In justifying the move, EPA administrator Andrew Wheeler said the old rule placed “heavy burdens on electricity producers” and the revisions would “protect public health and the environment.”

Coal-ash experts say Wheeler’s claims are phony and the EPA “should be ashamed.”

Burning Man

Every year in early spring, Lane Green sets half of his property in the Florida Panhandle on fire. But Green is no arsonist; he’s protecting forests, wildlife habitat, property owners—even the economy of the state. Scientists and land managers are in near-unanimity that prescribed fire is the single best tool available to help mitigate wildfire risk. “The fire culture has always been here,” says Green, formerly the director of the Tall Timbers Research Station. “There’s no place in Florida where fire is not an accepted practice.”
