Democrats Call for Supreme Court Expansion

Life News: Democratic lawmakers called for expanding the Supreme Court and abolishing the filibuster following a string of Supreme Court rulings not in their favor this week. “This far-right Supreme Court has ended reproductive freedom as we know it,” Democratic Rep. Mondaire Jones of New York said after the high court issued its ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. “We must expand the Court.” “I ask my colleagues in the Senate what other judicial outrage must we endure from the illegitimate, far-right majority on the Supreme Court before we act?” Democratic Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts posted. “Fight back and expand the Court now” (Life News). Woke Corporations Announce New Regulations Regarding Covering Employees’ Travel Expenses for Abortions

Washington Post: Walt Disney, JPMorgan Chase and Dick’s Sporting Goods said Friday they would cover employee travel expenses for abortions in light of the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down Roe v. Wade, joining the ranks of corporate giants scrambling to adjust to the new reality. Disney said the “family planning” benefit would be extended to any worker who cannot access care where they live, including “pregnancy-related decisions.” The company employs 195,000 worldwide, including roughly 80,000 in Florida (Washington Post). CNBC: JPMorgan Chase, one of the largest employers in the U.S. financial industry, told workers that it will pay for travel to states that allow legal abortions, according to a memo. The news came as part of an internal communication to employees explaining expanded medical benefits set to begin in July (CNBC). Townhall: Amazon is another woke corporation that will encourage its female employees to get an abortion by paying them a stipend of $4,000 to cover travel expenses that are not available within a 100 mile-radius of their home. And last but not least, streaming giant Netflix announced it will also provide female employees a hefty stipend of $10,000 for travel costs and the procedure itself (Townhall).

Republicans Introduce Bill Punishing Those Who Leak Supreme Court Draft Opinions

Townhall: In wake of the leaked draft opinion on the possible overturn of the Roe v. Wade document, Republicans want to punish those who leak sensitive information and hold them accountable for their actions. Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) proposed a new legislation that seeks to punish anyone who is convicted of leaking a pending U.S. Supreme Court draft opinion with fines up to $10,000 and 10 years in prison. Titled Stop Supreme Court Leakers Act of 2022, the bill would also seize any profits the leaker made as a result of their actions, claiming that the person should not receive a reward for leaking confidential information (Townhall). Senator Bill Cassidy: The recent #SCOTUS leak was an attempt to publicly intimidate justices & undermine the integrity of the Court—all while putting lives at risk. Just introduced the Stop Supreme Court Leakers Act to hold leakers accountable & take away any hopes of profiting off their crimes (Twitter).

Biden Signs Bipartisan Gun Control Bill Into Law

USA Today: Proclaiming that “lives will be saved,” President Joe Biden signed a bipartisan gun bill Saturday designed to keep weapons away from dangerous people, one month after a horrific elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. “At a time when it seems impossible to get anything done in Washington, we are doing something consequential,” Biden said in brief remarks at the White House, hailing the gun bill as the most significant law of its kind in “the last 30 years.” The new law enhances background checks on young gun buyers between 18 and 21 years of age. It encourages states to develop more and better “red flag” laws that would deny guns to people who are deemed to be dangerous. It also adds dating partners to the list of domestic abusers who are prohibited from buying firearms, eliminating the so-called “boyfriend loophole.”  Biden cited new crackdowns on gun trafficking and straw purchases (USA Today). Just the News: It does not include a ban on assault-style weapons or guns with high-capacity magazines. The U.S. House passed the Safer Communities Act Friday by a vote of 234-193 after the Senate passed it Thursday night by a vote of 65-33 (Just the News).

Daily Wire: Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) claimed without evidence on Sunday that some U.S. Supreme Court justices who voted to overturn Roe v. Wade “lied” under oath during their confirmation hearings, which she said is “an impeachable offense.” Ocasio-Cortez made the remarks during an interview on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” with host Chuck Todd, who brought up how Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) said that the justices had testified “under oath” (Daily Wire). Meet the Press: @repaoc: “There must be consequences for such a deeply destabilizing action and hostile takeover of our Democratic institutions” (Twitter). Townhall: Following the court’s ruling, justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett were criticized for evading a question of whether or not they would support overturning Roe v. Wade during their confirmation hearings (Townhall).

Iran Nuclear Deal Talks to Resume Soon

Wall Street Journal: Negotiations on restoring the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal will resume again in the coming days, the European Union’s foreign-policy chief, Josep Borrell, said Saturday during a trip to Tehran, although the prospects of reaching a deal remained far from certain. The negotiations have been stuck for the past 3½ months, with a deal blocked by a dispute over the scope of lifting U.S. sanctions on Iran. The talks are aimed at agreeing on the steps needed for Iran and the U.S. to come back into compliance with the 2015 agreement, which removed most international sanctions on Iran in exchange for tight but temporary restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program. Meanwhile, the Biden administration is facing rising opposition to restoring the nuclear deal in Congress, including from some Democrats. That has turned many diplomats involved in the talks pessimistic about the odds of breaking the stalemate (Wall Street Journal). Washington Examiner: In March, the EU, which is overseeing the talks, invited parties to the agreement to Vienna. However, the talks were delayed because of Iran’s insistence that the U.S. remove the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, an elite security force, from the U.S. Foreign Terrorist Organization list. Iran has made a new proposal to bring the U.S. back into the talks, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said last week, though the details of that proposal have not been released (Washington Examiner).

Putin to Supply Ally, Belarus, with Nuclear-Capable Missiles

BBC: Russia will send nuclear capable short-range missile systems to its ally Belarus in the coming months, President Vladimir Putin has said. He said Iskander-M systems “can fire ballistic and cruise missiles, both conventional and nuclear types.” The systems have a range of up to 500km (310 miles). Mr Putin has made several references to nuclear weapons since then, which some have interpreted as a warning to Western countries not to intervene. Speaking in St Petersburg, Mr Putin also said Russia would help to modify Belarusian SU-25 warplanes so that they could carry nuclear weapons, in response to a query from Mr Lukashenko (BBC). Newsweek: Belarus has been one of Russia’s closest allies since Putin invaded Ukraine in late February. On Saturday, Ukrainian intelligence officials claimed that Russia fired missiles from Belarus in an effort to “drag” its ally into the war… Last week, Mark Voyger of the Transatlantic Defence and Security Program at the Center for European Analysis, noted that the Belarusian military is scheduled to hold training exercises on the Ukrainian border later this month as well as next month, which has raised concerns (Newsweek).

Russia Sends Missiles Into Capitol City of Kyiv

Associated Press: Russia shattered weeks of relative calm in the Ukrainian capital with long-range missiles fired toward Kyiv early Sunday, an apparent Kremlin show-of-force as Western leaders meet in Europe to strengthen their military and economic support of Ukraine. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the missiles hit at least two residential buildings, and killed one person and injured six others, including a 7-year-old girl and her mother. Associated Press journalists saw emergency workers battling flames and rescuing civilians from the buildings. The strikes also damaged a nearby kindergarten, where a crater pocked the courtyard. U.S. President Joe Biden called the attacks “barbarism” after he arrived in Germany for a Group of Seven summit (Associated Press). CNN: The Ukrainian State Emergency Service said the fire was caused by “enemy shelling” and was over an area of 300 square meters, in “a 9-storey residential building with partial destruction of the 7th, 9th and 9th floors.” The same neighborhood was hit by a missile strike in early May, and was also targeted in March (CNN).

G7 Summit Announces Ban on Russian Gold

Washington Post: President Biden and his counterparts in the Group of Seven nations are announcing a ban on new imports of Russian gold in an attempt to further isolate the country from financial markets and punish Russian President Vladimir Putin for the invasion of Ukraine. The ban on gold imports, which could amount to a penalty of tens of billions of dollars, appeared to be the primary new economic sanction to be imposed on Russia out of the summit. Administration officials declined to comment on whether other punitive steps would be taken (Washington Post). National News: US President Joe Biden is floating the idea of a price cap on Russian oil to toughen sanctions and avoid a situation where the Kremlin receives more money for fewer exports because of the runaway price of fuel. American diplomats suggested that this could be done by blacklisting oil tankers if the fuel they are carrying is above the price cap, meaning they could not receive shipping insurance. The US is “looking for ways to minimise the effect of rising oil prices and the profits that Mr Putin continues to get from those oil prices”, said national security spokesman John Kirby, referring to the Russian president. European countries have said they are willing to discuss the idea, but are wary of charging back into the oil sanctions debate weeks after fractious talks on an embargo tested western unity over Ukraine (National News).

President Announces $200 Billion Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment

NBC: President Joe Biden outlined plans Sunday for a range of global infrastructure projects the U.S. aims to help finance with $200 billion in government and private sector funding as it looks to counter similar efforts by China. Biden announced the efforts at the G7 summit in Germany, where he has been meeting with world leaders. The funding will be spread out over five years and come from a mix of existing federal funds, other G7 and European Union countries, and private companies and investment funds, said a senior administration official (NBC). President Biden: Tune in as I deliver remarks with other G7 Leaders to formally launch our Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment – an effort that is critical to our economic and national security (Twitter). Wall Street Journal: The announcement came on the first day of the G-7 summit, where the agenda was dominated by Russia’s war against Ukraine and the economic fallout from it for Western countries that have imposed a barrage of sanctions against Moscow. The U.S. and its allies said Sunday they would ban Russian gold imports. The leaders aimed to display unity in their confrontation with Russia, but an accumulation of political and economic problems at home has tested the allies’ stamina to withstand rising food and energy prices. At the same time, the early focus on China, which is expected to carry through the G-7 gathering and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit in Spain on Tuesday, has threatened to expose older fault lines between Western allies (Wall Street Journal).
