Dear Resident,

It was Armed Forces Day on Saturday and as I write this, I am remembering all those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our great nation and keep us secure over many decades. It also important to acknowledge so many of our armed forces who have life changing and impactful experiences. Just last Sunday I was honoured to join Long Eaton Royal British Legion for their annual lunch, so many of its members having served in conflict. With the ongoing situation in Ukraine still at the top of the agenda, it is important our government continues to provide military and humanitarian support to Ukraine.

Several Erewash families are playing their part in supporting Ukrainian families who have fled the conflict and have opened their homes to a number of families as part of the ‘Homes for Ukraine’ scheme. My community office has played a crucial part in helping with the visa process, therefore on Saturday I arranged a ‘get-together’ for all the host families and Ukrainians to help form a support network over the coming months. It was really encouraging to learn that some of the Ukrainians have already found employment. However, I also found it really disturbing that many of the families here are not complete, with a number of husbands and sons still in Ukraine and communicating with their loved-ones from the frontline.

I always get great pleasure from visiting local schools and Friday was no exception when I visited Cloudside Academy in Sandiacre and Wilsthorpe School in Long Eaton. Cloudside is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and I was delighted to see a plaque in the entrance commemorating its official opening by Margaret Thatcher in her capacity as the Secretary of State for Education and Science. In the entrance to Wilsthorpe there is also a plaque to commemorate the official opening of the new school building in 2018 by Damian Hinds who was our Secretary of State for Education at that time. Ms Milson, the relatively new Head at Cloudside was telling me how her pupils excel at art and really enjoy sport. I am sure she, alongside many other Heads will be delighted to hear that today the Government has announced a multi-million-pound investment into sports and music education. There will be £320million for 2022/23 to give more children access to high quality PE lessons and sporting
opportunities through the PE and Sports Premium. £11million has also been confirmed to support the continuation of the Schools Games programme. I’m looking forward to seeing some of these activities in action on future school visits.

One of the pieces of legislation debated and passed in the House of Commons over the last few days was the legislation necessary to ensure the additional financial measures recently announced by the Chancellor can be implemented. I know the continuing rise in cost of everyday items, whether it is food, petrol or domestic gas and electricity, is extremely worrying, however I want to reassure you that the ongoing situation is being continually monitored and further action will be taken should it be deemed necessary. If you are struggling financially or are not sure if you are receiving all you are entitled to, there are many organisations that can help – the job centre, CAB and of course my caseworkers in my community office are always there for you.

With best wishes,
Maggie Throup MP
Member of Parliament for Erewash
