Friends –
Our nation’s schools should be the safest places in our communities, full of learning, fun and happy memories.
They should not be places of horror and nightmares.
The school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, is now the third deadliest school shooting in modern U.S. history, behind only Virginia Tech and Sandy Hook.
Speaking is still physically difficult for me, but my feelings are crystal clear: I am furious.
I am furious with those who have the power to act and save lives but are afraid to do anything to end this uniquely American epidemic.
But I also know that their fear is nothing like the fear those children in Texas felt as their lives and the lives of their classmates ended in a hail of bullets.
Or the fear the parents must have felt when they were alerted that there was an active shooter at their kids' school.
Congress knows how to solve this problem.
Congress knows the steps we can take to protect our kids in their classrooms.
This time is different.
That's why I'm so pleased to announce, with the leadership of Sen. Chris Murphy, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act is officially law! The Senate and the House passed the act and President Biden signed it just yesterday.
This is the first significant federal action on gun safety in nearly 30 years. But this work is far from over. We need your help to get it done.
Please, split a $5 contribution between my work at Giffords PAC to change our gun laws and American Bridge PAC to continue leading the fight to make our communities safer from gun violence.
I will not rest until we have changed our laws so we can finally look our parents in the face and say: We are doing everything we can to keep your children safe.
Thank you for standing with me.
With courage,
Gabby Giffords
