John — seven years ago today, I was on the steps of the U.S.Supreme Court, awaiting the decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, the landmark gay marriage case.

Thousands of us were gathered there — almost all of us on the side of love — truly not knowing which way the Court would rule. And when the announcement came down that we’d won, the response from the crowd was unlike anything I’d experienced. It was a sheer moment of powerful joy. The Supreme Court had validated that our relationships were worthy of the cherished institution of marriage.

Today, we celebrate this landmark victory and the countless LGBTQ couples and families whose lives it changed for the better.

But it’s also a bittersweet day, because we know that the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down Roe v. Wade — in addition to being an outrageous assault on our freedoms — puts the Supreme Court’s precedent on marriage equality in serious jeopardy as well.

That’s a horrifying prospect, but we are not helpless against it.

Here in Colorado, I want to assure you that for as long as I am Governor, marriage equality — just like the right to choose — will remain the law of the land.

Here in Colorado, we believe in freedom: the freedom to be who you are, marry who you love, and decide what you do with your own body.

But since we can’t count on the Supreme Court, that means it’s up to us to elect leaders in Colorado who will defend our rights. And the fact is, in this race, I’m up against right-wing opponents who would seek to ban both abortion and gay marriage.
