Now that the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, every red state surrounding Illinois can quickly follow Missouri’s lead and explicilty make abortion illegal, turning Illinois into an oasis in the Midwest for women to access safe reproductive health care.

In 2020, nearly 10,000 people crossed the state border into Illinois to have an abortion – a 29% increase from the year before, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health. Without the constitutional protections provided by Roe v. Wade, I know that number will only increase.

I’m proud that Illinois remains a place where reproductive rights are secure, and I will continue to protect those rights wherever they are under threat.

While Illinois proudly protects reproductive freedom, we all benefit when every single person is able to access the care they need in their own communities, without facing additional (and often impossible) burdens associated with traveling out of state. If we support these rights for Illinoisians, then we must support them for people everywhere.
